What is the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD)?

TICAD was launched by the Government of Japan (GoJ) in 1993 as an initiative to refocus international attention on Africa’s development needs and reverse the declining trend of development assistance for Africa, following the end of the Cold War. In the course of nearly 30 years, TICAD has evolved into a major global multilateral platform for mobilizing and sustaining international support for Africa’s development under the principles of African ownership and international partnership. Since its launch, it is important to note that GoJ has been increasingly shifting its TICAD focus towards supporting the Japanese business sector’s entry to African markets. Since its launch, TICAD is organized -in alternance- in Tokyo and in Africa. This time, TICAD8 is hosted by the Government of Tunisia.

Together with the GoJ, TICAD’s co-organizers include: AU Commission (AUC), UN Office of the Special Advisor on Africa (UNOSAA), UNDP, and the World Bank.

What will be discussed at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD)?

Through TICAD8, Japan aims at strongly support African-led development and aims at setting out a pathway for African recovery from the pandemic, looking ahead to the post-COVID-19 era.

TICAD8’s thematic pillars as announced by Government of Japan are:
