Murrupula, Nampula - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), through funds from the Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, supported with the construction of seven (7) inclusive toilets in the Murrupula Primary School, in Nampula province.
"Before, the students only used two toilets (for girls and boys), which didn't have running water and weren't accessible to students with disabilities, so this support from UNICEF was important because, in addition to increasing the number of toilets for the students, they were careful so that all students could use them in safety," said Manuel José de Caetano, the school director.
Jaime, a 10-year-old student with disability, attends second grade and uses a wheelchair for mobility. In the past, he had difficulty using the bathroom without support from his classmates. Now, with the new inclusive toilets, he can easily and safely use the bathroom.
In addition to the construction of these new toilets, 19 toilets have been refurbished, which will benefit more than 4,800 students in grades 1 to 6.
