Hygiene and dignity kits reach families on Mefunvo Island
UNICEF is supporting the distribution of hygiene and dignity kits in collaboration with PRONANAC, with generous support from the Mozambique Humanitarian Fund.
On Mefunvo Island, children’s daily lives are shaped by the sea, their families and the routines of island life. Reaching the community requires travel by sea, which can make it difficult for services and humanitarian assistance to arrive.
Since the beginning of the armed conflict in 2017, Mefunvo, in Quissanga District, had not received humanitarian assistance, including as part of the response to Cyclone Chido, which affected Cabo Delgado Province.
Recently, humanitarian assistance reached Mefunvo, with 663 families receiving hygiene and dignity kits. The distribution took place over two days because of the challenges of reaching the island by sea.
For families, the kits provide more than essential items. They can help strengthen children’s daily hygiene practices and reduce risks associated with limited access to essential hygiene products.
The arrival of this assistance on Mefunvo Island highlights the importance of reaching communities in hard-to-reach areas with essential services and humanitarian support. It also recognises the role of communities themselves, who continue to care for their families and support one another.
