UNICEF and partners have led the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history.

COVID-19 is a global problem – and COVAX has been a global solution.
Vaccinating the world against this disease is the largest vaccine procurement and supply operation in history. UNICEF and partners, with generous support from our donors, have been working around the clock to ensure that no country is left behind.
These efforts are helping to close the global vaccine equity gap. Hundreds of millions of people across the world have been reached with COVID-19 vaccines and the vaccination rate in many countries has risen significantly.

UNICEF's role
Through the COVAX Facility – together with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, WHO and CEPI – UNICEF has been leveraging its unique experience as the largest single vaccine buyer in the world.
During the pandemic, we’ve been working with manufacturers and partners on the procurement of COVID-19 vaccine doses, as well as freight, logistics and storage.
UNICEF has had all hands on deck, working to ensure that all countries participating in the COVAX facility have equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
Thanks to these efforts, there’s now enough supply of COVID-19 vaccines to reach global demand.
Strengthening health systems
As the supply of COVID-19 vaccines has increased, the priority now is to turn those vaccines into vaccinations.
To continue to close the vaccine equity gap, it’s imperative that countries set ambitious targets for implementation.
For COVID-19 vaccines to reach those that need them the most, and for vaccination rates to continue rising which will protect communities from disease, building strong national primary healthcare systems is essential.
That means prioritizing healthcare workers, building confidence in community health institutions, increasing the number of vaccination sites, focusing on routine immunization campaigns, and strengthening logistics and supply.

The Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator is a global collaboration to speed up the development, production and equal access to COVID-19 tests, treatments and vaccines. COVAX (the vaccines pillar of the ACT-Accelerator) aims to accelerate the development and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines, and to make sure that they reach the poorest countries in the world.
