Muetuquemba, a four-month-old child, born in the province of Cunene, was identified during a practical activity carried out at the Provincial Hospital of Cunene (Queimados), as part of a refresher training in Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (GIDA – PTPA), with the financial support of the European Union Humanitarian Aid (ECHO). During the screening conducted by the health technicians in training, the child showed obvious signs of dehydration and low weight for his age, weighing only 4.5 kg. According to his mother, Muetuquemba showed no evolution in weight gain and continued to lose weight, despite the efforts made at home to ensure his diet.
In view of the clinical condition observed, the child was promptly referred to Ekuma Hospital, where he received care in the Special Nutrition Unit. During five days of hospitalization, he benefited from specialized medical care and adequate nutritional treatment, including the administration of F100 therapeutic milk, essential for recovery in cases of acute malnutrition.
Throughout the treatment period, Muetuquemba demonstrated a positive evolution in his state of health. Their weight increased to 4.9 kg, accompanied by visible improvements in physical condition, with greater vitality and a progressive recovery of nutritional status. Thanks to timely intervention, continuous monitoring and the dedication of the health team, the child currently has better prospects for growth and development.
The mother, Dona Rita Nambalo, expressed her recognition for the support provided, highlighting the contribution of UNICEF, namely through the provision of a hygiene and sanitation kit, as well as the commitment shown by health professionals during the treatment of her son. He also committed to follow the guidelines received regarding food and nutritional care, essential for the continuity of recovery at home.
In her testimony, Dona Rita shared that, at the time of hospital admission, her son was in a state of great fragility, with breastfeeding difficulties and continuous weight loss, despite attempts to feed at home.
Today, he expresses relief at seeing the improvements achieved. However, she is concerned about the post-discharge period, especially in relation to the continuity of adequate feeding, taking into account the limitations in the production of breast milk and the unavailability of therapeutic milk outside the hospital context. Even so, she highlights her satisfaction at seeing her son recovered and healthier, reinforcing the importance of the support received for the child's survival and well-being.
