These are reports related to the national conference on “Children in the Digital Age: Towards a safer internet in Thailand.” The conference was organized on February 8-9, 2023, jointly by UNICEF Thailand, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and ECPAT International. Its main objective was to facilitate dialogue and exchange of knowledge regarding the safety of children and young people online, addressing the issue of child online sexual exploitation and abuse (OCSEA), and exploring the role of the private sector and ICT industries in promoting online safety.
The conference brought together children, young people, and various stakeholders in Thailand to foster coordination and collaboration among them. The Thailand Safe Internet Coalition was launched publicly on the second day of the conference. The coalition consists of government agencies, private sector companies, NGOs, and telecommunication operators committed to creating a safe and empowering online environment for children and young people in Thailand. The Department of Children and Youth serves as the core coordinator of the coalition.
The conference report highlights four key recommendations to protect children in the digital environment:
- Strengthen legal frameworks to prevent OCSEA.
- Enhance digital literacy among children, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders.
- Encourage responsible business practices among private sector companies.
- Promote multi-stakeholder partnerships to address online risks faced by children.
These recommendations will serve as a guide for the development of policies and programs to ensure the safety of children and young people in Thailand's digital environment.
