Every child lives in a safe and clean environment
Highlights
As part of the broader Global Annual Results Report, the Goal Area 4 Chapter presents results on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) as well as climate, environment, energy and disaster risk reduction (CEED).
Goal Area 4 of the Strategic Plan aims that every child has access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, and lives in a resilient community and a safe climate and environment. UNICEF works on three results areas: to provide WASH services through direct support, to support government partners to strengthen national WASH systems, and to address climate change, disaster risks and environmental degradation, with a focus on the most vulnerable children.
In November 2023, UNICEF launched the Sustainability and Climate Change Action Plan (SCAP) 2023-2030, a transformational moment in realizing children’s right to a safe, healthy and clean environment that will help states to implement global frameworks and commitments, such as the SDGs.
Headline results:
- Nearly 36 million people (including over 1.5 million with disabilities) gained access to safe water available when needed and over 7,500 schools and 3,000 health care facilities were provided with basic WASH services.
- 5 million people accessed climate resilient water systems and climate-resilient sanitation facilities. Sixty-eight countries adopted child-sensitive climate and disaster resilience programmes.
