Statement by UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell on the deaths of Ariel and Kfir Bibas

21 February 2025

NEW YORK, 21 February 2025 – "I am deeply saddened by the confirmation of the deaths of Ariel and Kfir Bibas in the Gaza Strip, and call for the urgent return of their mother and all hostages held in Gaza. On behalf of UNICEF, I offer my heartfelt condolences to their loved ones, including the children’s father.

“We condemn the parading of the coffins of the hostages on Thursday.

“UNICEF remains concerned for the wellbeing of all the children affected by the attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and since then. Abduction, killing, and maiming, constitute grave violations committed against children in conflict – which no child should ever experience.

“All children, wherever they are, have the right to live in peace and safety with their families.”
