UNICEF statement on reports of children killed and injured in airstrikes in Myanmar
BANGKOK/YANGON, 03 November 2026 - UNICEF is deeply alarmed by reports that three children were killed and five others injured when an airstrike struck a school serving displaced children and families in Loikaw Township, Kayah State, Myanmar, on 31 October.
Further airstrikes were reported in Rakhine State over the weekend, including one that struck a temporary healthcare facility, reportedly killing a newborn baby and healthcare workers.
These reports are yet another stark reminder that children are bearing the brunt for the devastating conflict in Myanmar. They are being killed and injured in the very places where they should be safe and protected, including schools and healthcare facilities.
UNICEF calls on all parties to the conflict to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and take all necessary measures to protect children. Schools, healthcare facilities and other civilian infrastructure on which children and families depend must be protected.
UNICEF is working closely with partners to assess the needs and coordinate support for affected children and families.
