Análise aprofundada dos factores da desistência escolar no ensino primário em Moçambique
UNICEF Moçambique/2023

Highlights

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the prolonged school closure has further challenged school attendance with 6.9 million students being affected in primary schools. In many cases, the perspective of no return to school has been looming (UNICEF 2021a). While the inability of schools to adapt to distance learning and the limited access to information channels have posed significant barriers to the continuation of learning, socio-economic factors have also been behind this risk, including the need to generate income (UNICEF 2020b), increased household and child-caring responsibilities, early and forced marriage and/or unintended pregnancy (UNESCO 2020).

Against this scenario and following the request and indications of the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) the Qualitative Study offers insights into critical aspects hindering children’s motivations and capacity to attend school, including compounding factors of COVID-19.

This report presents findings from the Qualitative fieldwork conducted in six schools of the Northern, Central, and Southern Regions of Mozambique. Findings of the
Qualitative Study are also born out of children's own voices and perspectives. In doing so the Qualitative Study, through the narratives, pictures, and illustrations, contributes to the growing body of literature that positions children as valid social actors in their communities.
