UNICEF strengthens district-level case management for vulnerable children and families

Nampula, Mozambique - A child protection team from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) conducted intensive visits to the districts of Nacala-a-Velha and Mossuril in Nampula Province to bolster technical support for district social workers providing case management to victims of violence, child marriage and other protection concerns.

These efforts form part of UNICEF’s broader commitment to safeguarding children and supporting their caregivers across Nampula Province.

Home-based services for 7,000 families
In Nampula City and surrounding areas, nearly 7,000 families now benefit from regular home visits, psychosocial support, and referral pathways to justice, health, education, and birth registration services.

Early risk identification through the Child Grant
Under the Subsídio para a Criança (Child Grant), social workers are trained to detect protection risks at the household level, providing targeted guidance to caregivers. This proactive approach helps prevent incidents of violence and empowers adolescent mothers with peer-to-peer support and access to essential services.

Rapid response for Cyclone Jude survivors
Following the March 2025 landfall of Cyclone Jude, affected families in Nampula Province are receiving comprehensive family situation assessments. In the coming weeks, mobile UNICEF supported teams will deploy across impacted communities to restore vital civil registration documents—including birth certificates and identity cards—ensuring children and caregivers can access humanitarian assistance and government services without delay.

Strengthening district level case management not only addresses immediate protection risks, but it also builds resilient communities where children can thrive. Social workers are equipped with new skills and resources to reach the most vulnerable families—whether they face violence, child marriage or natural disaster displacement.

UNICEF remains committed to partnering with the Government of Mozambique and local civil society organizations to expand these services across the country by the end of 2027.
