UNICEF Mozambique Statement on Increasing Violence Against and Abduction of Children in Cabo Delgado

MAPUTO, 3 June 2025 - UNICEF Mozambique is deeply concerned by credible reports of violent attacks and abductions targeting children in Cabo Delgado province. A recent attack on Magaia village, in the District of Muidumbe, on 11 May, in which it is reported that three girls aged 17, 14 and 12 were killed and eight others, including six girls and two boys, were abducted, is a tragic reminder of the dangers children face in conflict-affected areas.
During this incident, it was also reported that one girl managed to escape, while the two boys who were taken were killed and five remaining girls are still missing.
UNICEF is also concerned by the rising trend in reports of abduction, recruitment, and use of children by non-state armed groups, which are grave violations of children's rights.
UNICEF continues to work with partners to support affected children and their families, facilitate the safe return and reintegration into communities of children abducted by non-state armed groups, and ensure access to essential services.
Every child has the right to live in safety, free from violence and fear.
