Sweden, WFP, and UNICEF join forces to support children and young people in Palma, Cabo Delgado

Maputo, 11 February 2025- The Government of Sweden, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) are launching a new joint programme to support children and young people in Cabo Delgado’s Palma district.
With the ongoing conflict, children and youth in Cabo Delgado face critical challenges, including exposure to violence, displacement, and limited access to education and social services. Many children and young people in the province are out of school, lacking foundational skills for employment, and experiencing heightened risks of early marriage and economic hardship, and the programme’s interventions will be critical to addressing these pressing issues.
In the spirit of ONE UN, WFP and UNICEF will work together leveraging their specific expertise and long-standing experience in Cabo Delgado to join forces for a stronger impact. The three-year initiative will focus on inclusive and equitable education, child protection, and social-behavioural communication, while also addressing power dynamics, gender inequalities, and climate resilience. By supporting the learning, development and safety of children and equipping young people with the necessary tools to access sustainable livelihood opportunities and economic independence, the programme aims to drive lasting change in Palma district.
To build resilience and long-term stability, the programme will strengthen government and community capacities to deliver quality education and child protection services. It will provide opportunities for skill development, youth leadership, and employment while ensuring gender-sensitive programming that supports girls and young mothers. Reintegration services for children affected by armed conflict, including family tracing and alternative care options, will also be prioritized.
The Government of Sweden is donating US$ 11 million for the implementation of this programme.

By investing in inclusion, resilience, learning and protection, together we are creating a brighter future for children, young people, and society as a whole,” said UNICEF Representative Mary Louise Eagleton.
“Thanks to Sweden’s contribution, we will strengthen food security, education, and social services to create lasting change for young people in Palma”, said WFP Country Director and Representative, Antonella D’Aprile.
This partnership demonstrates the commitment of WFP, UNICEF, and Sweden to address the urgent needs of vulnerable children and youth, ensuring a future where every child has access to education, protection, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
