Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic is turning the lives of children upside down.
Across East Asia and the Pacific, families of young children face challenging and unprecedented circumstances. With children out of school, parents must juggle work, or cope with changes to their work schedule, all while supporting their children's development. These changes – and the resulting stress and anxiety -- could have a lasting impact on our youngest children.
We know that in the earliest years of life, the brain develops at an astounding speed of more than 1 million new neural connections every second -- critical for a child’s development. This period builds the foundation for a child’s future long-term health, development, learning and earning potential. These connections take place when children receive adequate nutrition, stimulation and protection – or eat, play and love. Typically, these are provided by parents.
With the vast majority of children out of schools, it is vital that all girls and boys continue to learn and be stimulated in a safe, nurturing environment.
