Duration

The initiative "Romania for every child. Emotional Balance. Creation of a functional model intervention for Mental Health and Psychological Support  - MHPSS for children and adolescents" will be implemented for 24 months in Bucharest.

Aims

The initiative aims to promote the emotional wellbeing of adolescents and young people and to strengthen prevention, early detection and referral to support services for mental health problems by strengthening the public system and facilitating a public-private partnership to develop and sustain services. In essence, the project aims to produce a working model that can be replicated and scaled up. In parallel with the development of a model, this initiative will support awareness-raising and the creation of demand for such services among adolescents and their carers.

The aim is to develop a sustainable capacity to provide these types of services to all vulnerable groups of children and to use digital innovations and technologies to increase access and quality.

Main results

A functioning local intersectoral and cross-sectoral model to promote and protect the emotional well-being of adolescents in Romania.

  • Improved capacity within the public system to promote well-being and support adolescents in accessing mental health services.
  • Increase awareness of the importance of the relationship between parents and adolescents for both parties.

Long-term effects

The initiative is framed as an operational research intervention for a short period of time, which will then prepare in practice and with evidence a longer-term, large-scale public sector intervention in line with national strategies aimed at improving quality and access to mental health services. This, in turn, is expected to significantly reduce the incidence rate of mental health problems in adolescents.

Several elements of innovation based on work carried out by UNICEF and other partners at regional and global levels include:

  • intervention models based on formative research with young people to determine their needs and solutions;
  • adolescent educators for adolescents;
  • use of dedicated platforms and digital apps to facilitate access to services, increase awareness and self-care;
  • use of dedicated platforms and digital apps to facilitate access to services, raise awareness and self-care;
  • using dedicated apps to support the emergence and maintenance of safe behaviors among adolescents;
  • integration of prevention services into work with parents in parenting components and with schools;
  • extending to business to include dedicated programs for parents, guardians and carers.
