About
In today's society, social and emotional skills are considered essential for children and adolescents to help them navigate safely in an environment full of challenges, from academic and social pressures and bullying to mental health issues. Social and emotional skills encompass a wide range of abilities, including self-awareness, autonomy, emotional self-regulation, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
Schools play a crucial role in this context, serving not only as centers of academic learning, but also as environments where students can develop essential life skills. Research over the past few decades shows that students with well-developed social-emotional skills tend to have better academic performance, balanced attitudes and behaviors, and reduced emotional stress. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) argues that, in addition to better academic performance, social-emotional skills are key indicators in projections for the labor market, as well as for individual health and well-being, supporting healthy democracies.
