UNICEF's Mission

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works across 190 countries and territories, including Romania, doing whatever it takes to help every child survive, thrive and fulfill their potential, to the benefit of a better world.

We are UNICEF. We stand for every child, everywhere.

And we never give up.

Our history

UNICEF was established in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II to help children and young people whose lives and futures were at risk – no matter what role their country had played in the war. Our work matters more than ever today, with conflicts and crises threatening millions of children and young people, and millions more deprived of the opportunities they need to grow into healthy, productive adults.

Impartial and non-political, we are never neutral when it comes to protecting children’s rights and safeguarding their lives and futures.
