Learn about the regions where we work

Currently, Peru is an upper middle-income country where inequities persist, particularly affecting rural populations in Andean and Amazonian regions and those living in peri-urban areas. Peru is mostly an urban country, with a third of the population concentrated in Lima, the capital.
Therefore, in this country programme (2017-2021), UNICEF is concentrating its efforts in two Amazonian regions: Ucayali and Loreto; one Andean region: Huancavelica; and in a peri-urban district of Lima: Carabayllo. UNICEF selected these regions after considering the living conditions of children and adolescents by region and district.
