Disaster risk management
UNICEF helps children and adolescents, communities and governments prevent, reduce and manage disaster risks and increase their resilience
During emergencies and disasters, children and adolescents are vulnerable to: injuries and illnesses related to malnutrition, poor water quality and sanitation, psychological trauma and its debilitating effects.
Displacement and separation from parents, as well as the economic impact on their families, expose them to an increased risk of abuse, exploitation and trafficking.
UNICEF helps children and adolescents, communities and governments prevent, reduce and manage disaster risks and increase their resilience, including measures to adapt to climate change and promote environmental sustainability. To ensure the rights of children and adolescents in emergencies and disasters, UNICEF takes a comprehensive approach to influence public policies and strengthen the capacity of different actors, implementing specific actions related to: health, nutrition, education, protection, and water, sanitation and hygiene.
