Amadeus
A UNICEF corporate partner since 2012
Leveraging expertise, network and big data to help shape a better future for the world’s most vulnerable children.
Amadeus is a technology company providing software solutions tailored to meet the needs of the global travel and tourism industry. Travelers and holidaymakers use Amadeus services to book or reserve flight or train tickets and hotel rooms, with some 560 million travel documents printed through Amadeus systems every year. UNICEF is the world-leading organization working in support of children, operating in more than 190 countries and territories. Through this partnership, UNICEF and Amadeus are making connections between their respective areas of expertise to help shape a better future for the world’s most vulnerable children.
Click for Change
To help raise funds for UNICEF, Amadeus created an online donation tool that enables travel providers to collect micro-donations from customers as they book their travel online. Through Click for Change, passengers can make a donation to UNICEF’s programmes in education, child protection, emergencies and development. For example, a $10 donation can help children in developing countries go back to school, or provide children affected by emergencies with life-saving supplies and interventions. To date, Click for Change travel partners include Finnair, Iberia, Almundo and Avianca airlines.
The Click of Change donation tool is open to use on any travel website. If you’re interested in using Click for Change to support UNICEF programmes, email: industry.affairs@amadeus.com
Big data for social good
With the help of partners like Amadeus, UNICEF’s Office of Innovation has developed a software platform called Magic Box to use real-time data to inform life-saving humanitarian responses to emergency situations. This open-source platform ingests data from public sources and from private sector partners, and generates insights based on methodologies and algorithms provided by our data science team. This information helps UNICEF teams in the field deliver timely and appropriate emergency and humanitarian responses to the children and families that need it.
Magic Box in action
In 2015, Amadeus and UNICEF joined forces to tackle the Zika Virus, which if contracted by a pregnant woman can cause malformations in the unborn child and even lead to pre-term birth and miscarriage. Amadeus shared vital travel and flight information with UNICEF’s Magic Box that proved crucial in tracking and predicting transmission paths, helping UNICEF teams on the ground better prepare and tackle the disease.
As a result of the Amadeus partnership, global flight data can now be used to understand mobility patterns of individuals and communities to predict human behaviour in a natural disaster, pandemic or other emergency.
