Water brings joy in Gorkha
Government of Finland and UNICEF jointly hands over community water supply schemes in Gorkha, the epicentre of 2015 Nepal earthquake.

The Government of Finland and UNICEF jointly handed over community water supply schemes in Bhumethan, Arughat Gaunpalika and Rangung, Barpak Sulikot Gaunpalika in Gorkha District on 29 January 2019.

The schemes are part of UNICEF’s WASH Recovery and Reconstruction programme supported by the Finnish Government following the devastating Nepal earthquake of 2015.

The programme has provided taps to individual households in line with the ‘one house one tap’ drive.

and managing waste water.

UNICEF's partner COSDER and SSICDC have been supporting the reconstruction and recovery of WASH facilities in Gorkha district.

Finnish Ambassador to Nepal, H.E Mr Pertti Anttinen handed the schemes over to the local water users’ committee.

The handover ceremony was celebrated with much fanfare by the local people.


UNICEF is currently rehabilitating at least 70 water supply schemes which will serve over 17,000 people in four earthquake-affected districts.

Likewise, over 100 schools have been supported with child, gender and disabled-friendly WASH facilities. The School WASH programme will benefit at least 19,000 schoolchildren.
