Mozambique Hosts Second National Social Work Conference to Strengthen the Profession
The conference served as a platform to share experiences and identify opportunities to strengthen legislation, practice standards, and professional development for social workers in Mozambique.
Maputo, 3 and 4 July 2025 – With UNICEF’s support, the Association of Social Workers of Mozambique (AASMO) convened the Second National Conference on Social Work under the theme “Strengthening the Profession, Building the Future: Promoting Capacity Building and Intervention in Social Work.”
Over two days, social work professionals, government representatives, academics, civil society actors, and global partners gathered in Maputo to reflect on the progress made since the first national conference in 2018 and to chart a way forward for the profession. Participants included representatives from the Global Social Service Workforce Alliance, the International Federation of Social Workers, and Social Work Associations from Brazil, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde, and Ghana.
The conference served as a platform to share experiences and identify opportunities to strengthen legislation, practice standards, and professional development for social workers in Mozambique. It also offered an important moment to reaffirm the critical role of social workers in supporting children and families, especially the most vulnerable, and in advancing child rights and protection systems nationwide.
UNICEF remains committed to supporting the professionalisation of social work in Mozambique as a key pillar of child protection and social welfare services.
