The disparities between rural and urban areas are significant, with 2.6 % of the urban population depending on surface water, equating to 0.3 million people, compared to 14 % in rural areas, representing 3.1 million individuals.

A significant portion of Mozambique’s population (41%) depends on unimproved water sources or surface water, with this figure rising to 54% in rural areas.

In 8 out of 11 provinces, over 30% of the population relies on either unimproved sources or surface water.
