UNICEF Policy on Ethics in Evidence Activities Involving People as Participants or Subjects

Strengthening accountability by reinforcing key principles grounded in international standards.

About

Evidence activities – such as research, evaluation, monitoring and data collection – are critical to UNICEF’s mandate and they must be conducted in a manner that upholds UNICEF’s commitment to ensure that high-quality and ethical evidence informs all aspects of UNICEF’s work and ensure positive impact for children.

The UNICEF Policy on Ethics in Evidence Activities Involving People as Subjects or Participants strengthens accountability by reinforcing key principles grounded in international standards, with a strong emphasis on organizational learning and ongoing improvement.

The Policy requires prioritization of the best interests of children and ethical practice across the full lifecycle of activities, including through requirements for ethics review, safeguarding, risk management, meaningful consent/assent, confidentiality, privacy and data management.

It applies in the context of all UNICEF-supported evidence activities and promoted work.
