Advancing Large Scale Food Fortification

UNICEF’s Vision and Approach

About

The evolving face of child malnutrition demands a new multi-faceted response that supports nutritious and safe diets at every stage of life. This response must acknowledge the central role of the food system – working together with the health, water and sanitation, education, and social protection systems – to provide nutritious, safe, affordable, and sustainable diets for children, while ensuring adequate nutrition services and positive nutrition practices across the life cycle. Food fortification, defined as the addition of one or more vitamins and minerals to commonly consumed foods, is a proven and cost-effective intervention for addressing micronutrient deficiencies by improving the nutritional quality of the food supply in the population.

This document presents UNICEF's vision and approach to advancing Large Scale Food Fortification as set forth in the Nutrition Strategy 2020-2030.
