Angolan Youth in Action: Local Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals.

World Youth Day, celebrated on August 12, is more than a symbolic date. It is an invitation to reflection, action, and recognition of the essential role that young people play in building fairer, more resilient, and sustainable societies. Established by the United Nations (UN), this day highlights the challenges, achievements, and immense potential of global youth.

In Angola, to be young is to live in constant transformation. It is questioning the status quo, dreaming big, and facing uncertainties with courage. It is precisely this energy that makes youth an agent of change.

Youth-Led Climate Action

In partnership with Rádio Nacional de Angola, UNICEF hosted an inspiring roundtable discussion with young leaders of environmental organizations, under the theme "Local Youth Action for the SDGs", with a special focus on SDG 13 – Climate Action.

Representatives of the Otchiva, Eco Angola, Nação Verde, and the Association of Women Environmentalists participated, who presented innovative local solutions that are transforming communities and protecting the planet.

Environmental Education as a Pillar of Sustainability

Environmental education is an essential tool to form citizens who are aware and committed to the preservation of natural resources. In the face of environmental degradation and climate change, it is urgent to rethink development models and promote sustainable educational practices.

"To reduce the increase in climate change, we can start with basic things such as reducing electricity consumption, or reducing drinking water consumption, and reducing garbage burning. We can adapt renewable energy because it will help reduce global warming."Said Telma Costa of the Association of Women Environmentalists of Angola.

This education must be integrated at all levels of education and also in non-formal spaces such as NGOs, community associations, and media with strong participation of civil society.

Mangrove Protection: A Strategic Priority

Mangroves face increasing threats such as uncontrolled urbanization, pollution, and deforestation. Angolan youth have responded with reforestation and awareness campaigns, demonstrating that the protection of these ecosystems is possible and necessary.

UNICEF's Role in Youth Empowerment

UNICEF has played a crucial role in supporting Angolan youth through the Genial Challenge, offering intensive training, bootcamps, and mentoring sessions. These initiatives empower young people with practical skills that can be applied in their personal lives, studies, and careers.

Youth as a Protagonist of Change

Youth is plural, creative, and restless. When you offer space, listening, and investment, the results are extraordinary. Public policies aimed at quality education, access to culture, job creation, and mental health are essential for young people to realize their potential.

More than institutional support, it is necessary for society to trust young people, allowing their participation in political decisions, leadership, and communication. Celebrating World Youth Day is to reaffirm that there is no real change without the active participation of youth.

 UNICEF plays a crucial role in the lives of the young participants of the Desafio Genial in Angola, which goes far beyond simply organizing the event.  Its work covers practical, emotional, technical, and strategic support, to empower and transform the potential of young people into real solutions to the problems of their communities. UNICEF provides intensive training through boot camps and mentoring sessions to young people.

Here is what UNICEF does concretely in the lives of these young people: by carrying out these activities, many young people gain skills that they can apply in their personal lives, studies, and careers.

 But in addition to institutional support, society as a whole must trust young people more. This means making room for their participation in political decisions, in leadership, and in communication. It means allowing your ideas to be respected and taken seriously.

We reiterate that youth is not only the future, but also the present. We believe that, with cooperation, appreciation, and adequate support, it is possible to consolidate a transformative movement led by young people, capable of promoting significant changes at local, national, and global levels. We are prepared and determined to continue to act, aware that every action, no matter how small, contributes to a more sustainable world.
