World Children’s Day 2018
For children, by children
On the occasion of World Children’s Day, children and young people from Nepal as well as Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan (connected online) took over a UNICEF and SAARC meeting in Kathmandu.
During the event, the children and young people held a lively discussion with the UNICEF and SAARC leaders and voiced their concerns on online safety, mental health and protection from child marriage and sexual abuse.
They also came up with recommendations for the leaders on these issues. The event also included signing of the petition (available online at https://www.unicef.org/world-childrens-day) calling on world leaders to commit to fulfilling the rights of every child and acknowledge that these rights are non-negotiable.
In addition, 18 children and young people from Nepal took over the social media accounts of UNICEF Nepal to share their messages for the day.
UNICEF staff in regional, country and field offices marked the importance of the day by going blue.
Celebrated on 20 November every year, World Children’s Day is a global moment for children, by children, all over the world to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.
It’s a fun day, with a serious message, when kids ‘take over’ high-visibility roles in media, politics, business, sport and entertainment to shine a light on the most pressing challenges faced by their generation. It focuses on Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child that guarantees to all children and young people the right to freely express their views on all matters affecting them.
