Republic of Korea Provides Lifeline for Vulnerable Children and Families in Myanmar

YANGON, 21 August 2025 – UNICEF welcomed a generous contribution from the Government of the Republic of Korea to deliver urgent support for conflict-affected and vulnerable children and families in Myanmar. 

The timely funding comes as communities face overlapping challenges — from displacement and deepening poverty to disrupted services and rising health risks. More than 3.5 million people are displaced across the country; about one-third of them children. The recent 7.7 magnitude earthquake in central Myanmar — the strongest in over a century — and the ongoing monsoon season have further strained access to safe water, health care, and protection, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and other threats to child wellbeing. 

The contribution will enable UNICEF to scale up life-saving services in health, nutrition, child protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). This includes improving access to essential healthcare and nutrition for children and mothers, supporting safe water and sanitation solutions, and providing psychosocial support and protection services for children affected by conflict, displacement, and natural disasters — including those impacted by the recent earthquake—particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved areas.
