Advancing WASH in Health Care Facilities in Mozambique

From 2 to 5 December 2025, the Ministry of Health (MISAU), with technical and financial support from UNICEF and partners, held a National Seminar on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Health Care Facilities in Maputo. The seminar reaffirmed WASH as a critical foundation for quality health care, infection prevention and control and patient safety.

The event brought together government representatives from national to district levels, development partners, civil society and technical experts, fostering strong multisectoral dialogue. Participants reviewed key evidence and policy instruments, including findings from the Implementation Research on WASH in HCFs, the draft Technical Norms, and the National Strategic Roadmap for WASH in HCFs (2026–2035), while also discussing tools and approaches such as WASH FIT to strengthen WASH implementation and quality at facility level.

The seminar concluded with clear priorities: finalising and validating strategic documents, strengthening leadership and coordination, scaling up WASH FIT, and mobilising resources to ensure safe, resilient, and equitable WASH services nationwide. “Through stronger systems, clear standards, and sustained investment, we can ensure every health facility provides safe water, sanitation and hygiene, enabling clean and safe births,” said Mayza Tricamegy, UNICEF WASH Specialist.
