Mozambique advances collective action to end preventable maternal, neonatal and child deaths
INS/2026

Maputo, Mozambique - Today, the Government of Mozambique convened a High-Level Forum on the Community Health Subsystem and the reduction of maternal, neonatal and child mortality. The event, presided over by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health, brought together all Provincial Governors, district administrators and health directors, civil society, faith leaders, academia, development partners, and community health workers (APS) — alongside international partners and the Minister of Health of São Tomé and Príncipe.

The Forum followed two days of technical discussions, culminating in a shared commitment across all constituencies.

Participants underscored that most maternal, neonatal and child deaths are preventable, and emphasized the need for strong multisectoral collaboration — including health, education, WASH and social protection — backed by evidence on what works. Community health was highlighted as a cornerstone: a cost-effective platform to deliver prevention, detect and treat common conditions, and ensure timely referrals.

There was a strong call for sustained domestic financing and partnerships to strengthen community health systems — including training, incentives and equipment for community health workers.

A key milestone: the Prime Minister launched the National Alliance for the Acceleration of the Reduction of Maternal, Neonatal and Child Mortality, reinforcing a unified platform for advocacy and action.

UNICEF remains committed to supporting the Government and partners to ensure every mother and every child survives and thrives.
