Nampula Hosts Northern Regional Workshop on PESAN 2024–2030
Nampula city hosted the Northern Regional Dissemination Workshop on the Food Security and Nutrition Policy and Strategy (PESAN 2024–2030).
Nampula, Mozambique - In the lead-up to World Food Day 2025, Nampula city hosted the Northern Regional Dissemination Workshop on the Food Security and Nutrition Policy and Strategy (PESAN 2024–2030), reaffirming its role as a key hub for advancing Mozambique’s nutrition and food security agenda.
Held from 13 to 14 October under the leadership of the Executive Secretary of SETSAN, the workshop was funded by UNICEF Mozambique, which is supporting the nationwide dissemination of PESAN 2024–2030. The event brought together more than 100 participants from Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa provinces, including district administrators, provincial directors, technical experts and representatives from key sectors such as health, agriculture, education and planning.
The workshop aimed to strengthen provincial and district-level ownership of PESAN 2024–2030 by promoting the integration of nutrition as a central pillar of human capital development.
UNICEF Mozambique contributed to the discussions by presenting two strategic tools developed under the EU co-funded NutriNorte programme:
- The PESAN Mapping Tool, developed with SETSAN and JICA, which visualises the geographic distribution of nutrition interventions and helps identify coverage gaps.
- The Budget Tracking Analysis, conducted with FDC, which provides insights into public financing for nutrition and supports advocacy for increased and better-targeted investments.
These tools are designed to enhance evidence-based planning, coordination and resource mobilisation at subnational levels, enabling decision-makers to identify priorities and address critical gaps in nutrition service delivery.
The workshop concluded with SETSAN’s commitment to issue technical guidance on the prioritisation and monitoring of high-impact nutrition interventions, particularly at the district level. This marks a key step toward operationalising PESAN 2024–2030 and ensuring that nutrition remains a cross-sectoral priority across all levels of governance.
UNICEF will also fund the upcoming dissemination workshops in the central and southern regions, reinforcing a nationwide effort to align stakeholders, build capacity and accelerate progress towards better nutrition outcomes for children and families across Mozambique.
