Khaby Lame
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2025
“From my own experience as a child fearing poverty, struggling to find my passion at school, and losing my job during the COVID-19 pandemic, to finding my place and calling in the world, I know that all children can thrive when they are given a chance and opportunity.”
Khaby Lame is a 24-year-old content creator and the #1 most-followed person on TikTok, with a total social media reach of over 240 million followers. He rose to popularity for his simple, speechless video responses to content that depicts complicated ‘life hacks’. In his own videos, Lame performs the same task in an authentically simple way, usually with a humorous expression and signature hand gesture. Lame’s ability to connect with viewers around the world has been widely attributed to his relatable and accessible style. In 2022, he was listed in Fortune's 40 Under 40 and Forbes' 30 Under 30. In 2024, Forbes named him a top 10 content creator. Khaby's success is rooted in his universal appeal, as his content transcends language barriers.
Lame was born in Senegal on 9 March 2000, a year before his family moved to Italy, where he and his three siblings grew up in a public housing complex near Turin. Lame studied in Italian schools until he was 14, when he moved back to Senegal to study at a Quaranic school. In March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lame was working as a machine operator at a factory near Turin before getting laid off. It was at this point that he began creating content on TikTok, his early videos showing him dancing and watching video games.
Unlike many influencers, Lame’s rise to fame was entirely organic. As of January 2024, six of the 25 most-liked videos on TikTok were his. While many observers have credited Lame’s universal appeal to his “exasperated everyman” (The New York Times) style, Lame himself feels it’s his humorous facial expressions and silence that acts as "a way to reach as many people as possible."
In his role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Lame will use his global platforms to help raise awareness of children’s rights across the world, including education and training, empowering girls, protection from violence and abuse, and access to health, nutrition and a clean environment.
