On 23rd May 2024  in Coban, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, a group of women gathered in the Virtual Learning Environment (EVA) where they had their first encounters with technology, allowing them to continue expanding their knowledge. With the support of UNICEF, 45 EVAs are being implemented in 18 departments across the country.

Highlights

In 2024, the Information and Communication Technology Division (ICTD) strengthened UNICEF’s ability to respond to the challenges facing children worldwide. The report highlights how UNICEF ICTD responded to a year of escalating crises, from armed conflicts to climate disasters, by leveraging digital technology to protect child rights and help deliver essential services.

It also showcases our work in digital equity, innovation, and preparedness, including:

  • Supporting emergency operations in the State of Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen
  • Successfully activating disaster recovery protocols during the Valencia data centre flooding
  • Advancing digital inclusion in South Asia and pioneering affordable tech access
  • Mapping under-immunized children in West Africa, and expanding the Bebbo parenting app
  • Laying the groundwork for UNICEF’s AI Strategy 2025–2030 to guide responsible and impactful use of AI
