Materials from the region

The world’s most unequal region faces unique challenges in adolescent mental health, particularly among indigenous and Afro-descendant populations. Over one in seven adolescents suffer from a mental disorder, with anxiety and depression being the most common. The region's high rates of interpersonal violence, especially affecting Afro-descendants, contribute significantly to adolescent mental health issues. Both interpersonal violence and suicide are the leading causes of adolescent deaths.

Explore our page to learn about evidence-based approaches, such as school-based programs and community initiatives for refugee children, aimed at promoting preventative and promotive mental health strategies for adolescents. Discover how countries in this region are working to reduce stigma and increase access to culturally appropriate mental health support.
