An overview of the prices for oral polio vaccines (OPV) from various suppliers from 2004 to 2024.

About

In line with its commitment to transparency, UNICEF publishes the prices it pays to vaccine manufacturers. This document lists prices paid for the following OPV presentations:

  • Bivalent types 1 and 3 OPV vaccine in a 10-dose vial
  • Bivalent types 1 and 3 OPV vaccine in a 20-dose vial

The prices are listed per dose in US dollars and are based on multi-year supply agreements. The document includes prices of trivalent OPV vaccines and monovalent OPV vaccines as historical references only as these presentations are no longer in use.

Key document presents the price trends over the years, per presentation and per supplier. Some prices are marked with special terms, indicating specific conditions or agreements. The document also notes that the prices are mostly based on FCA (Free Carrier) Incoterms from 2004-2006 onwards and that prices may vary depending on the country or group of countries.

OPV is used to eradicate polio, a disabling and life-threatening disease that primarily afflicts children under the age of 5. OPV can stop person-to-person spread of the virus that causes polio. It is also easy to administer and can be distributed quickly on a large scale. Vaccination has prevented billions of children from contracting the disease and is the most effective way to prevent and eradicate polio.

UNICEF procures OPV from qualified manufacturers on behalf of governments and partners.  UNICEF manages the procurement and distribution of over 1 billion doses of polio vaccines annually, accounting for more than 50 per cent of global oral polio vaccines (OPV).
