Reducing the impact of and building resilience against disasters in communities
Highlights
UNICEF started the child center disaster risk reduction (CCDRR) programme with a generous funding support of the Margaret A. Cargill Foundation in Nepal in 2013. Initially, the programme was implemented in four districts: Accham, Dhanusha, Parsa and Saptari, which was expanded to four new districts in 2016, namely: Baitadi, Bajura, Dhading and Dolakha, the latter two were affected by the 2015 earthquake.
The main objective of the CCDRR Programme is to reduce the adverse social impacts of hazards on vulnerable children, their families and communities in risk-prone areas and build their capacities for resilience, risk reduction, and response preparedness. Since the start of the CCDRR Programme, there have been major events including 2015 earthquake and the country’s transition to federalism. The CCDRR programme itself underwent an evolutionary process and so were the learnings and experiences over the past six years.
The document tries to capture those learnings and key achievements of the CCDRR programme in Nepal.
