In October, seven additional healthcare facilities in Mozambique gained access to improved Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services. The new facilities, built in five health centres in Zambézia Province (Alto-Molócuè and Namacurra districts) and two in Nampula Province (Angoche and Moma districts), feature solar-powered water systems, sanitation blocks, and waste management infrastructure.

These sites mark the final phase of a UNICEF-led initiative funded by the World Bank through the Ministry of Health (MISAU), which upgraded WASH infrastructure in 60 healthcare facilities across Mozambique.

Beyond construction, the programme strengthened national and subnational systems through improved coordination and the development of strategic frameworks that align with the global agenda to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. By promoting clean and safe births, it directly supports Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), improving the quality of care and ensuring safer, more hygienic environments for patients and health workers alike.

The initiative has also drawn national attention to the WASH crisis in healthcare settings, standing as one of Mozambique’s most significant large-scale efforts to improve health service quality through sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene systems.
