Mozambique Launches ECD Index 2030
A Milestone for Early Childhood Development
On May 29, 2025, the Ministry of Health (MOH), with support from UNICEF and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, hosted a national workshop to launch the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Index 2030 and disseminate key findings from the 2022–2023 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS).
The event brought together around 50 stakeholders from the public and private sectors, with opening remarks from Marla Amaro (MOH) and Maaike Arts (UNICEF). The meeting featured speakers from the MOH, National Statistics Institute (INE), UNICEF, and WHO.
The data reveals both progress and pressing challenges: only 39% of children aged 24–59 months are on track in health, learning, and psychosocial well-being. Stark disparities persist across regions, wealth levels, and gender. Provinces like Nampula, Zambézia, Tete, and Niassa show the lowest development rates, while Maputo leads.
Key priorities include expanding access to quality pre-primary education, improving early stimulation and care, supporting parents and caregivers, and strengthening multisectoral coordination.
The ECD Index 2030 aims to guide Mozambique’s efforts to ensure every child thrives.
