This year UNICEF Mongolia is launching a new project to bring cleaner water,  better sanitation and hygiene (WASH) to rural communities across the country. The effort is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Eleva Foundation and UNICEF UK.

Many people in Mongolia, especially in remote areas, still struggle to access clean drinking water and proper sanitation. Only 30% of the population has access to safe drinking water, and just over half have access to proper toilets. This is due to the country’s challenging climate, rural lifestyle, and aging infrastructure. Poor water quality is a serious issue, often made worse by weak wastewater treatment systems[1].

This new four-year project aims to reach at least 1,000,000 people to benefit from the construction of solar-powered water supply and sanitation facilities, promoting safe WASH practices in their communities, and public institutions (schools, kindergartens and health care centres) in 18 provinces.  The goal is to improve public health, especially for at least 400,000 children and vulnerable communities.

The project will install:

  • 45 smart water kiosks powered by solar energy, providing safe drinking water 24/7.
  • 24 container-based indoor toilets with small wastewater treatment systems, also powered by solar energy.
  • Support provincial governments in running safe WASH service campaign events.
  • Government contributions are expected to cover 30-50% of the construction works.

By combining clean technology with smart solutions, this partnership will help build a healthier and more sustainable future for families in Mongolia’s remote areas.
