What is the situation?
Although Latin American and Caribbean countries have dedicated significant efforts to increase the professional level of teachers and education providers, newly available data reveals persisting gaps in teachers' skills.1
Moreover, the results of regional evaluations2 also suggest the need to improve teachers’ pedagogical skills to promote learning and strengthen students' competencies.
The COVID-19 pandemic revealed that education systems were unprepared to face the dramatic changes in the teaching-learning landscape and that teachers in the region lacked the necessary tools, digital skills, and support to meet the emerging challenges of remote education.
Teacher competencies are part of the foundations of quality education.
UNICEF’s work
Our work to strengthen education quality and relevance entails providing advice for curriculum review processes and supporting teacher training and professionalization, which include:
- Digital competencies.
- Skills and formative assessment tools.
- Innovative pedagogies based on information and communication technologies (ICT).

By promoting innovative pedagogies, we aim to empower and support teachers and pedagogical facilitators while promoting new approaches to personalized and adaptive learning, both inside and outside the classroom.
