WASH Acts 2023:

WASH Acts Compilation (Jan-Dec 23)

A compilation of the quarterly bilingual and accessible newsletters highlighting UNICEF's efforts in advancing universal access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene in Indonesia during 2023.

WASH Acts Vol. 13 (Oct-Dec 23)

The Government of Indonesia has made great strides in ensuring millions of people with access to basic sanitation. Despite this, 11 million people in Indonesia still practice open defecation (OD) in 2023 (BPS, 2023). Ending OD and providing safely managed sanitation have become key targets in RPJMN 2025-2029 and RPJPN 2045. WASH Acts vol. 13 highlights UNICEF’s support to the Government of Indonesia’s effort to eliminate OD, achieve safely managed sanitation, and contribute to the broader WASH agenda through high-level advocacy and coordination, capacity building, and mainstreaming GEDSI, leaving no one behind.

WASH Acts Vol. 12 (July-Sept 23)

People with disabilities, the elderly, and adolescent girls face various barriers in accessing safe WASH services and the burden increases when WASH services are not available. Effective collaboration among all WASH stakeholders is essential for the successful delivery of WASH services for all. WASH Acts vol. 12 highlights UNICEF’s support to the Government of Indonesia to accelerate the agenda of providing resilient and inclusive WASH access for all through national and subnational stakeholder coordination and collaboration, horizontal learning, and private sector engagement.

WASH Acts Vol. 11 (Apr-Jun 23)

Adolescent girls and women are disproportionally affected by the lack of access to safe WASH services, especially during menstruation. The prevalent taboo about menstruation hinders adolescent girls from accessing valid knowledge and information causing improper MHH practices and limited access to receiving education. WASH Acts vol. 11 highlights UNICEF's support to the Government of Indonesia to accelerate the MHH agenda enabling adolescent girls to better manage their sexual reproductive health and reach their full potential, thus achieving greater gender equality.

WASH Acts Vol. 10 (Jan-Mar 23)

The Government of Indonesia (GoI)’s efforts in expanding universal access to safely managed drinking water over the years have resulted in 91% of household with access to improved drinking water (BPS, 2022), though disparities in access remain. However, when it comes to access to safely managed drinking water, it is at just 11.8% (MoH, 2020). Insufficient funding, inadequate infrastructure and capacities, and natural disasters still pose significant challenges. WASH Acts vol. 10 highlights UNICEF Indonesia’s support to the government in accelerating access to safely managed water and the broader WASH agenda.
