Why Yutopia?

India’s 371 million young people aren’t just the future; they are the driving force of today’s economy. Their energy, creativity, and advocacy are crucial to building a resilient and innovative India.

Yet, young people are increasingly discerning in how they engage with institutions across the public and private sectors, with expectations for relevance, inclusion, and authenticity higher than ever. At the same time, their participation in co-creation and decision-making remains limited.

Across sectors, this gap has far-reaching implications. There is an urgent need for institutions to evolve and centre youth within their strategies, not only as participants or employees, but as partners, co-creators, and leaders. This is what we’re calling ‘Youth Centrality.’

Youth Centrality requires a shift in culture, behaviours, and mindsets. Yutopia is a bold step in that direction.

Launched by UNICEF YuWaah, in collaboration with SAP, Yutopia: A Public, Private, & Youth Collective aims to embed sustainable youth-focused processes in the public, private, and civil society sectors.

What does Yutopia do?

Yutopia supports alliance-member organisations in building systems where young people are heard, included, and invested in.

Based on 9 principles of Youth Centrality, this involves creating opportunities for young people to shape decisions, influence solutions, and contribute their lived experiences, while ensuring that engagement is inclusive, safe, and meaningful.

Yutopia drives structural change through four levers:

Collaborative Convenings

to unpack youth centrality and tailor strategies to make systems more inclusive and future-ready

Capacity Building

for organisational leadership and teams to adopt and apply meaningful youth engagement principles

SMART Commitments

by alliance members to institutionalise youth inclusion through measurable, actionable changes

Co-creation of Knowledge Products

showcasing impactful practices and youth-led innovations to facilitate sector-wide learning and adoption, through podcasts, articles, and op-eds

Youth inclusion isn’t about ticking a box - it’s about recognizing the value we bring to the table. We’re often told we’re too young or inexperienced, but when we're given trust and responsibility, we show up with fresh energy, ideas, and a different way of seeing things.

How does Yutopia work?

  • By 2030, Gen Z and Millennials are projected to constitute nearly 74% of the global workforce, bringing digital fluency, creativity, and adaptability.
  • As organisations navigate high attrition, disengagement, burnout, and evolving workforce expectations, traditional approaches to attracting and retaining young talent are proving insufficient.
  • Unlocking the full potential of young people requires sustained investment in productive employment, growth, and wellbeing.
  • Based on UNICEF YuWaah's Youth Centrality in the Workplace framework, Yutopia supports organisations through a structured, evidence-based, three-phased engagement to invest in their current workforce and future growth.

  • Despite significant investments in youth-focused health, education, and livelihoods programmes, many young people continue to face structural barriers, skills mismatches, and unemployment.
  • Programmes are more effective when young people are engaged as co-creators rather than passive beneficiaries, strengthening relevance, participation, and trust.
  • Based on UNICEF YuWaah's Framework for Meaningful Engagement of Youth as Beneficiaries, Yutopia supports organisations with evidence-based approaches, ecosystem consultations, and peer learning.

Yutopia integrates youth participation and perspectives into policy-making, expanding the impact of government programs through youth networks. This shift to participatory governance ensures that policies are more inclusive, effective, and future-proof for youth entering the workforce.
