Children affected

  • 52.4 per cent (EU 53.9 per cent) of children below 15 years and 87.8 per cent (EU 71.2 per cent) of young people aged 16-24 have basic or above basic digital skills.
  • 18.2 per cent of children participating in a study in 2015 reported issues linked to Internet addiction, while 4.2 per cent reported having experienced cyber-bullying.

CRC Recommendations (2022)

  • 24. While noting the transposition of EU Directive 2016/800, the Committee reiterates its previous recommendation (para. 36) that Greece ensure the respect of the child’s privacy and non-disclosure of private information in the context of criminal and child-protection proceedings, prosecute violations and impose deterrent sanctions, including with regard to the media.
  • 25(a) Protect children from information and material harmful to their wellbeing, including by developing specific guidelines and a code of conduct for the media, providing for mechanisms to prosecute violations and enhancing the digital literacy and skills of children, teachers and parents.

  • Most of social welfare and mental health professionals have not received any information or guidelines on how to deal with internet addiction and cyber bullying.

  • 25(b) Ensure that children have access to diverse information and materials in languages they can understand.
  • 25(c) Provide information in the migrant children’s languages and in childfriendly formats on their rights, administrative procedures, access to international protection, healthcare, housing and education.
