UNICEF ZIMBABWE ANNUAL REPORT 2024
A Year of Progress for Every Child in Zimbabwe.
Highlights
In 2024, UNICEF Zimbabwe worked hand in hand with the Government, donors, partners, and communities to uphold the rights of children and deliver meaningful results in the face of significant challenges.
Government Collaboration: Our work remained closely aligned with Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), supporting national systems in health, education, social protection, and emergency response.
Emergency Response: Amidst one of the most severe droughts in recent history and outbreaks of polio and cholera, UNICEF acted swiftly to protect children. Emergency nutrition support, WASH interventions, and mass polio vaccination campaigns were rolled out to save lives and curb the spread of disease.
Stronger Systems for Children:
Eight new child-focused laws were enacted to strengthen care and protection systems.
Thousands of children gained legal identity through improved birth registration services.
The solarization of schools and expansion of digital learning tools enhanced learning environments and access to education.
Improved Access to Clean Water and Sanitation:
Through borehole rehabilitation, piped water systems, chlorination, and water kiosks, safe water access expanded significantly, especially in cholera-affected areas.
Sanitation improvements helped reduce disease risks, particularly in rural communities.
Health & Nutrition: Expanded immunization programmes and community health initiatives helped protect children from preventable diseases, while targeted nutrition support tackled malnutrition, helping children grow and thrive.
World Children’s Day 2024: Zimbabwe proudly hosted the Regional World Children’s Day celebrations, bringing together 7,000 children from seven countries. Young people engaged meaningfully with decision-makers, advocating for their rights with passion and clarity.
Partnerships That Make It Possible: Despite global economic pressures, generous donor and private sector support remained steady. These contributions powered both lifesaving interventions and sustainable development initiatives across the country.
While challenges such as climate change and economic instability persist, our shared progress in 2024 underscores what’s possible when we work together. In 2025, UNICEF Zimbabwe will continue advancing policies, innovation, and systems that prioritize children—ensuring every child in Zimbabwe has the opportunity to survive, grow, and thrive.
