Youth-led Action in Latin America and the Caribbean
Learn more about the exciting work being done across the region
In Latin America and the Caribbean, 106 million adolescents between the ages of 10 and 19 are navigating crucial changes in their lives. As they experience physical, emotional, and social growth, they are also defining who they can become and what role they will play in society. Despite their potential, many adolescents in the region face significant barriers that hinder their ability to fully participate in shaping their futures. Predominant challenges in the region include a rising rate of youth violence; one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy in the world; unaddressed physical and mental health needs, and limited opportunities to develop skills needed to succeed in school, life and for the transition from school to work.
Although some countries have made progress in establishing mechanisms for youth engagement, many adolescents and young people remain excluded from decision-making spaces. Adolescent participation is a fundamental human right. Strengthening their skills and capacities can empower them to become a driving force for inclusive, positive change. To build a better future, it is essential to ensure that adolescents' voices are not only heard but placed at the center of policies and decisions affecting their lives.
