WASH support in Marib: a tangible impact serving thousands of people in need

The generous funding enabled UNICEF to implement three projects to pump potable water in Marib governorate. The projects aim to provide clean water sources to the poorest areas in Yemen, contribute to reducing the incidence of diseases caused by drinking contaminated water, and care for personal hygiene and sanitation in Marib governorate.

“The project was implemented to build water networks and pipelines for the Al Syanah District, Al-Sahn District, and Al-Salam neighborhood. In addition, three projects were implemented in the Harib district in Marib governorate. The projects are serving 62,500 people,” says Engineer Al-Samawi.
Rabie Al-Eryani, a technical engineer at Water and Sanitation Corporation in Marib installs water meters to beneficiaries’ homes, in the neighborhood where WASH assistance was provided in Marib governorate, Yemen.
“The project is located in the Al Syanah neighborhood in Marib city. About 1,700 connections have been installed,” says engineer Rabie Al-Eryani.
“The project marked a qualitative leap because it saved a large number of displaced people and residents of the neighborhood. People were suffering from using salty water they had to buy from water tankers at high costs.”
Yahya Al-Faqih, 54, is one of the beneficiaries of the projects implemented by UNICEF and funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center in Marib governorate.
“Most of the water in Marib governorate is salty. Before the implementation of the project, we used to take water from private wells or buy it from water tankers at a high cost,” says Al-Faqih.“This project is considered one of the most important projects implemented in Marib governorate because water is the lifeline, water is a necessity and the basis of life. Where there is no water, there is no life,” adds Al-Faqih.
Al-Junaid Al-Nour, 55, a resident of Marib, fills his tank with fresh, clean, and safe water that is provided by the new project.
“We used to rely on water trucks and buy water at a very high price. Sometimes we would spend a whole day to fetch water.This project is very important to me, to my family members, and to all the residents of the neighborhood,” says Al-Nour Mohammed.
One of the children enjoys the fresh, clean, and safe water in the neighborhood where the WASH intervention was implemented by UNICEF with funding from KSrelief in Marib governorate, Yemen.
Abdulghani Basheer has seven family members, says: “This project is vital and necessary for the basic necessities of life. Before the project, we used to buy water from water trucks at three times its normal price. However, after the project, the water situation improved significantly, as it now fully covers the needs of the family.”
