Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) supply and demand update
An update on the bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine supply availability and demand.
Highlights
Tuberculosis disease (TB) is the 13th leading cause of death worldwide, and the second leading infectious disease after COVID-19. Effective prevention interventions for TB include neonatal vaccination with the bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, which offers partial protection for infants and young children against severe forms of the disease. It is estimated that high global coverage (90 per cent) and widespread use of BCG in routine infant vaccination programmes could prevent over 115,000 TB deaths per birth cohort in the first 15 years of life.
This market update provides information on the BCG vaccine, including global supply, demand and pricing trends. This update also provides an overview of the pipeline for the new generation of TB vaccines, given the need for a vaccine that is effective across all age groups, including adults and adolescents.
