Yellow fever is an epidemic-prone mosquito-borne vaccine-preventable viral disease transmitted to humans by the bites of infected mosquitoes. Yellow fever causes 29,000 to 60,000 deaths annually and has long affected tropical and sub-tropical regions. Its potential to cause widespread outbreaks poses a significant threat to health security.
Yellow fever testing is critical to disease surveillance efforts as it allows countries to identify outbreaks and take countermeasures, such as mass vaccination campaigns. Testing ensures yellow fever vaccines are used in the right place and at the right time. In collaboration with its global and regional partners, UNICEF ensures the availability of yellow fever surveillance assays and laboratory consumables for procurement, supporting the ongoing fight against yellow fever.
