Partnering to provide a safe and enabling space for children

Since 2024, Capitec Bank and UNICEF South Africa have partnered to help transform the Gingirikani Babangu Drop-in Centre in Limpopo into a safer, more supportive space for vulnerable children and their families. What was once a space operating with basic fire stoves for cooking and pit latrines, has now been significantly upgraded to provide children with dignity, safety and improved daily care.

Through this ongoing three-year partnership with UNICEF, Capitec has supported critical infrastructure improvements including a fully equipped and operational kitchen, upgraded ablution facilities, a multipurpose hall, septic tank systems, and improved access to clean water through the installation of a borehole, solar-powered systems and JoJo tanks. These upgrades are helping to create an environment where children can learn, grow and access essential services more consistently and safely.

The partnership is also investing in the people who care for children every day. Ten staff members are currently enrolled in training to become Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA)-accredited Child and Youth Care Workers, thereby strengthening the quality of care and support available at the centre and building long-term sustainability within the community.

The impact of this support is already being seen. During 2025, an average of 249 children received nutritious daily meals through the centre, while an average of 130 children benefited from educational support. Consistent meal provision, stronger engagement with caregivers, and increased staff confidence and capacity have all contributed to improved attendance and greater community trust in the centre’s services.

Partnerships like this demonstrate how investing in vital spaces like these can create meaningful and lasting change for children. UNICEF South Africa thanks Capitec for its continued commitment to supporting vulnerable children and helping build stronger communities.
