Durban - The UNICEF University of Kwazulu-Natal (UKZN) Campus Club held the official launch of the UNICEF Volunteer Initiative which involves the youth’s engagements as we activate our local communities. It was a night filled with passionate and dedicated students who all share the same sentiment on children’s rights and becoming part of a global citizen community. I realized then that if the human race would focus more on things we have in common and not on our differences; making an impactful transformation in our society would be possible and achieved.

It was meaningful to have a platform that is specifically designed to be utilised by the youth in a sense that we are able to create a society that believes in the importance of ensuring the safety and survival of the children of South Africa. This is the type of society that is filled with the spirit of Ubuntu and giving back. I believe that the UNICEF CAMPUS CLUB is a true depiction of a well-known phrase that “It takes a village to raise a child” - this is the spirit of UNICEF UKZN Campus Club. The spirit of being able to reach out and bring change into the lives of many, especially the children of South Africa.

UNICEF is well-known for their multiple, impactful initiatives that they have established in order to bring change and transform the lives of many. Initiatives such as the Results for Adolescents; Mobile Health Technologies and Girls Empowerment to name a few. Being aware and informed about these programs is one of the fundamental reasons that drew me to UNICEF and most especially to be involved in this new phenomenal global volunteer initiative.

These activations are the fundamentals of advocacy, community building, speaking out and fundraising. Our aim is to empower the youth with the resources and skills which lead to one transforming into a global citizen. UNICEF UKZN is committed to creating platforms such as activations on campuses, empowerment and skills development workshops, seminars and raising awareness of social issues that are affected by the majority. Our aim is to be able to create initiatives that will assist in integrating and interaction with the rest of the community. We have the power to bring change and raise awareness about children’s rights, women’s rights and social equality. Through the countless help and support from the UNICEF Global Initiative, we can confidently state that this platform will be breaking boundaries.
